About this book
Schiller's Poems lists in its contents The Meeting, The Secret, The Assignation, Longing and The Pilgrim, among other titles. The contents also list ballads, among them The Cranes of Ibycus, Hero and Leander and The Hostage.
In the poem headed The Pilgrim, a speaker goes forth to roam the world in youth's gay springtime, and says that earth will never meet the heaven. The poem headed The Ideals asks a faithless one whether it will leave the speaker with all its magic phantasy. Numbered pieces include one marked IX, in which voices say we children six had our being from a most strange and wondrous pair, and one marked X, which asks what is the thing esteemed by few that decks the monarch's hand with pride. A piece headed Dedication to Death, My Principal addresses the most high and mighty Czar of all flesh, ceaseless reducer of empires, and humbly lays a little book at its dried-up feet.
