About this book
Matthew Calbraith Perry by William Elliot Griffis is subtitled A Typical American Naval Officer and presented in the dedication as a biography of a sailor-diplomatist. The account of the Perry boys' education describes a mother's discipline sweetened with love, with obedience placed first in their education. The account names Christianity, honor and chivalry as principles instilled from birth.
The discussion of naval recruitment says that even in New York a sloop's crew could not be obtained in less than twenty days. The proposed remedy was to receive boys as apprentices who would serve until of age and receive education and clothing from the government.
