About this book

A familiar cheese dish opens the door to saints, animals and strange creatures in William Elliot Griffis's Welsh folk stories. Saint David teaches people to toast cheese or melt it over bread, and the tale then turns to Melangell, whose prayers shelter a hare from a prince's hounds. The next story introduces the Afang, a monster dwelling in a bog, with an armoured back, enormous eyes and an appetite that threatens the surrounding country.

Published in 1921, the collection also includes the tale of Elidyr, a schoolboy who prefers play to Latin lessons. He runs away, sleeps in a cave and grows hungry before meeting two elves who offer food and fun. The contents name a golden harp, the red dragon of Wales, giants and fairy meetings. Readers interested in Welsh folklore will find everyday details of meals, schooling and countryside woven into stories of protection, danger and magical encounters.
