About this book
McGuffey's Sixth Eclectic Reader is a schoolbook of reading lessons and passages for speaking aloud. A transcriber's note describes it as the schoolroom of 1900, with lesson numbers given in Roman numerals, and says that much is left to the teacher.
Among its lessons are numbered rules for the voice, such as that negative sentences usually take the rising inflection and that questions answerable by yes or no generally do too, each followed by numbered examples. One example comes from a formal address beginning 'Romans, countrymen, and lovers'. Other passages include a dramatic scene with Lampedo and a hostess, with an illustration, and a prose portrait of a man whose traits include wisdom, judgment, prudence and firmness.
