About this book
The New McGuffey First Reader is a book by William Holmes McGuffey. The preface says the book has been prepared in conformity with the latest and most approved ideas regarding the teaching of reading, and that its lessons embody and illustrate the best features of the word, the phonic, and the sentence or thought methods. The preface adds that only a few new words are introduced at each lesson.
The lessons are built from short sentences such as "I see a girl. I see a boy. I see a boy and a girl." A verse in the book asks how the little busy bee improves each shining hour, and says it gathers honey all the day from every bud and flower. A lesson tells of children who went out to take a walk one morning when the sun was warm, and names May and Rose and little Lucy.
