About this book
McGuffey's Eclectic Primer, Revised Edition is a reader for the first year of school by William Holmes McGuffey. Its preface says only about six new words are to be mastered in each lesson, and that the plan lets a teacher use the Phonic Method, the Word Method, the Alphabet Method or any mix of them.
After the preface come the alphabet in capitals and small letters, then Lesson I with a cat and a rat: A cat and a rat. A rat and a cat. Later lessons include Ned and John at work with a saw and an ax on a pile of wood, and two girls out for a walk in May who hear the birds sing. Script exercises appear throughout, and the slate exercises near the close have short words such as sun, cow, hen and pen, followed by a script alphabet and script figures.
