About this book

Mearing Stones gathers leaves from a notebook kept on tramp in Donegal and is accompanied by pencil drawings made by the author. The narrator says that, if asked what he remembered most vividly after a year's exile, he would name the county's gloom, describing black hills, chasing shadows, gleams of water and a tiny sunlit patch of field.

The sketch headed ORA ET LABORA describes a solitary man thinning turnips at noon on a summer's day. The field worker stands, removes his hat and bows his head in prayer when the Angelus sounds, returning to labour when the bell ceases. The approach to the open Atlantic brings salt to the travellers' lips while sand dunes obscure their view.
