About this book
The Heart of England is a work by Edward Thomas, described on a series page as a curious and enthusiastic explorer of the English Countryside. The text describes a pond that, when summer has honoured the water with a perfect suit of emerald green, shows itself to be a monstrous, coiled, primæval thing. A farm scene lets forty cows go past, and a strawberry cow leans over the gate of her stall and lows continually about her newly-born white calf.
The narrator says he thought the old man had spoken truly when he said that the Golden Age comes again with every dawn. The text says it is well to talk, or else to sing some old song, and offers the words "There's not a drunkard lives in our town."
