The contents of English Monastic Life list subjects ranging from the material parts of a monastery and its rulers to daily life, nuns and the paid servants of the monastery. The account describes separate houses under the Rule of St. Pachomius, each with its own head and officials and apparently organised around the trades followed by the inmates. The description gives an average of between thirty and forty people living together in each house.
The account of meals describes two juniors in some greater houses taking their goblets and spoons to the presiding superior's table. The junior monks were to assist the religious presiding in the refectory, anticipate his needs if possible and carry messages when required.
