About this book
Scenes and Characters of the Middle Ages is a book by the Rev. Edward L. Cutts, third edition, London, 1911, with one hundred and eighty-two illustrations. Its contents group chapters under The Monks of the Middle Ages, The Hermits and Recluses of the Middle Ages, and a section on pilgrims.
The monks section includes chapters on the Benedictine and Augustinian orders, the military orders and the orders of friars, and on the convent and the monastery. In one passage the author lists small offshoots of the Augustinian rule, such as the Nuns of Fontevraud and the Brigittines, founded by St. Bridget of Sweden in 1363. Another passage quotes Dugdale on the minstrels of Chester, who attended the heir of Dutton at Midsummer fair. A note mentions a hermit-priest in Malory.
