About this book
The book is the memoir and letters of Francis W. Newman by I. Giberne Sieveking. The contents list chapters on, among others, friendship with Dr. Martineau, Francis Newman as a teacher and letters to one of his greatest friends, Dr. Nicholson. The memoir mentions a great blow that fell on the Newman family soon after John Henry Newman had gone to college: his father's bank failed, with no bankruptcy and everyone paid in full.
The text says that in 1826 Francis Newman took first-class honours in classics and mathematics. A letter signed F. W. Newman says the writer's spirits are inexhaustible and his sense of health perfect, and seriously attributes this to the triple abstinence from alcohol, from narcotic (tobacco), and from flesh meat. A letter to Dr. Nicholson states that the Vegetarian Society is that in which the writer feels most active interest, though he is a Good Templar and earnest in nearly all the Women's Questions.
