About this book

Moral Emblems presents poems written and illustrated with woodcuts by Robert Louis Stevenson, with a preface recalling a boy living in a châlet on a snowy mountain-side overlooking a village. The account of the boy describes a business opportunity supplying programmes for weekly concerts, offered by a bearded gentleman who was very exacting about spelling.

A poem describes an industrious pirate scanning the horizon and predicts that the pirate will have made a pot of gold, retire from his labours and be respected by his neighbours. A Martial Elegy for Some Lead Soldiers describes soldiers steadfast in the field, leaden heroes struck down, and the completed work of a pea-cannon.
