Memoirs of General Lafayette

Memoirs of General Lafayette, by Samuel L. Knapp, comes with an account of his visit to America and of his reception by the people of the United States. The account runs from the arrival on August 15th to the celebration at Yorktown on October 19th, 1824. In the early part of 1778, when an attack upon Canada was proposed, Gen. Lafayette was appointed to command the troops collecting at Albany for that purpose.

The text says Washington ever doubted the propriety or the feasibility of the scheme, and eventually gave his opinion decidedly against it, and it was not prosecuted. A quoted account says that at about 4 o'clock the procession arrived at the City Hall, where General Lafayette was received by the Mayor and Common Council, and formally welcomed and congratulated on his safe arrival in the country. A speaker says that, of all the states in the Union, Virginia, though we will not say she is the most grateful, certainly owes you the largest debt of gratitude, and that this state was the chief scene of your services.
