About this book
Memoirs of Life and Literature is by W. H. Mallock, and its contents list names chapters called "Family Antecedents," "The Two Nations," "A Private Tutor de Luxe" and "Winter Society at Torquay." The text says that on "the Cockington property, which includes the district of Chelston, few dwellings existed which had not been there in the days of Charles II." The text says Torquay, "at the beginning of the Napoleonic wars," was "nothing more than a cluster of fishermen's huts" and "owed its rise to the presence of the British fleet in Torbay."
The author says "I had begun a campaign of speeches" and that "the land question generally, and not in Scotland only, continued to hold the most prominent place." The author confesses that "the mere artist in literature" is "a person for whom secretly I have always felt some contempt."
