About this book
Workshops, laboratories and observatories supply the setting for this collection of brief scientific lives, compiled and arranged by William Walker. The revised second edition appeared in 1864, with an introduction by Robert Hunt and an appendix of further biographies. Chemists, astronomers and engineers appear alongside inventors whose work changed manufacturing and transport. Each memoir names the sources used to assemble its account.
The entry on William Allen connects his chemical training and hospital lectures with experiments, astronomical interests and the schools he established near Lindfield. Henry Maudslay receives a detailed account of his workshop skills, precision tools and improvements to screw cutting. His work with Bramah and Brunel shows how mechanical knowledge passed between collaborators. Readers interested in the history of science can follow both the individual careers and the practical problems that gave their work a purpose.
