About this book
Handbook of Birmingham, credited to the British Association for the Advancement of Science, was prepared for members of the association and presents material about the town. The contents list old and modern accounts of Birmingham alongside sections on education and libraries, with libraries considered under past and present headings. The account of the Hospital or Priory of St. Thomas the Apostle says its name and site survive in local names, while the precise building location and foundation date remain uncertain.
The account of jewellery distribution says manufacturing jewellers generally sell to factors or middlemen, who select from different stocks to offer shopkeepers a better variety. The mineral account describes a barytes lode at Wotherton, worked for more than 60 years, and says the remarkably pure mineral is ground and sold in large quantities.
