About this book

Memories and Studies is by William James, dated 1911. A prefatory note says that shortly before his death he meant to republish a number of popular addresses and essays under this title, but found no opportunity to see to the details, and that the writer of the note, speaking of him as his father, has included two or three short pieces first given on special occasions.

One address, set in Concord, speaks of Emerson's loyalty to his own type and mission and of a spirit indescribably precious. An essay titled On Some Mental Effects of the Earthquake recalls leaving Harvard for Stanford University and feeling the bed move at about half past five on the morning of April 18. A footnote refers to a report on Mrs. Piper's Hodgson-Control. Another passage quotes a revelation in which each is all in God and the One remains.
