About this book
William James (1842-1910) prepared these lectures after the Harvard Corporation asked him in 1892 to talk about psychology to the teachers of Cambridge. He deliberately kept the technical vocabulary light and the practical advice heavy, so that a working teacher could use it, and he writes in a plain, conversational voice.
The fifteen talks to teachers follow the mind of a pupil: the stream of consciousness, instincts and native reactions, habit, the association of ideas, interest, attention, memory, apperception and the will. Small classroom stories, such as a child's odd idea of the passive voice, keep the theory close to real lessons.
The closing talks are addressed to students: one on relaxation, one on "a certain blindness" in people toward the inner lives of others, and one on what makes a life significant. It remains a readable account of habits of mind that teachers and parents still deal with.
