About this book

A nervous young intruder moves through the Prim family's house with surprising knowledge of its rooms and hidden safe. Outside, Oakdale's leafy streets give way to a country road where ordinary night sounds become alarming. Edgar Rice Burroughs opens this mystery and adventure novel with a contrast between the burglar's practiced movements indoors and the fear that follows the escape.

The family's conversation adds another source of tension: Mrs. Prim favors a wealthy marriage for Abigail, while Jonas Prim argues that their daughter should choose for herself. A later scene brings the Oskaloosa Kid, Bridge and a girl together over a meal cooked with makeshift utensils. Their banter mixes fellowship with suspicion about the Kid's activities. For readers who enjoy mysteries built around uncertain identities, the book offers clues in speech, behavior and the gap between confidence and inexperience.
