About this book

An accidental nickname starts a lively conversation in a Paris café, where Calderwell and M. J. Arkwright discover a shared interest in Billy Neilson. Calderwell recounts his unsuccessful proposals and explains how Billy first sought a home with William Henshaw in Boston. Her name led the household to expect a boy, making her arrival a source of comic confusion. William's collections, Cyril's music and Bertram's painting give each of the brothers a distinct place in the story.

Eleanor H. Porter's 1915 novel combines romantic concerns with the awkward business of understanding other people. Billy writes songs, and Arkwright's interest in her music adds another connection among the characters. A later scene turns on a valuable teapot: William offers to buy it from Mrs. Greggory, while her daughter Alice hopes new pupils will help their finances. Readers can follow both the humorous exchanges and the uncomfortable feelings that arise when generosity meets family pride.
