About this book

Billy and Bertram exchange their wedding vows with confidence, while their relatives consider what married life will ask of them. In this 1914 domestic novel by Eleanor H. Porter, the ceremony takes place in Billy's living room in Boston. Bertram's sister Kate sends her husband a sharply opinionated account, worrying that Billy's musical gifts and impulsive habits will fit awkwardly with household duties and her husband's painting career.

Later, Billy throws herself into keeping house, driven by a determination to prove her ability. Cookbooks lead her to food values and a manual promising greater efficiency through carefully balanced meals. Her excited explanations meet Bertram's impatience and William's concern about his customary eggs. The comedy grows from a serious strain within the marriage: how to reconcile creative work, affection and expectations of a wife's daily responsibilities. The conversational scenes offer a close view of family advice and the pressure it can place on a young household.
