About this book
Billiards is by Major W. Broadfoot, with contributions by A. H. Boyd, Sydenham Dixon and W. J. Ford, among others. A chapter headed Motion, Impact, and Division of Balls: Two-Ball Practice says the practice prescribed in the preceding chapter had for its chief object the attainment of certainty in striking ball 1 truly in the centre.
The text says a full stroke from ball 1 to ball 2 should double the latter in the one case into the right top pocket, in the other into the right middle pocket. The text says all these strokes should be played medium strength, say No. 1 or 2, and that in practice the angle of reflexion will be found to vary somewhat with the strength, and in a less degree with the table. A section by W. J. Ford says that when and under what circumstances winning hazard games were invented, billiard history does not record. The text describes placing the angle A of the instrument against the ball O in such fashion that the side A D points for the centre of the pocket.
