About this book
The account of temple ruins draws on inscriptions carved in stone and copper, old Javanese literature and surviving structures as evidence for religions flourishing side by side. The text describes Buddhism in its younger mahayana form as strongly impregnated with Sivaïsm, even giving spouses and sons to personifications of the Adi-Buddha.
The description of a ruined edifice records a square base and statues of Siva as Kala at the feet of staircases leading to terraces. The walls of the pit and terraces bear sculpture, including creatures described as a sort of griffins and scenes from the Ramayana, while no stone of the temple proper remains. A note reports severe damage to two little temples from a gale that brought surrounding trees down onto their remaining walls.
