About this book
Moods is a book of prose poems by Mercedes de Acosta, with a New York imprint of 1919. The pieces carry single-word titles such as Despair, Tenderness and Joy. Despair opens with a speaker who says there is no such thing as love and goes home to close the door.
In Tenderness, people say a woman in a big house is selfish and spoiled and that no one cares about her for herself. The narrator goes to hear Kreisler play, moved perhaps by the music of Beethoven, and sees the woman sitting apart in a box. In Joy, the speaker looks out at the snow on the ground and goes out to the park, where the white stretch of snow makes the heart beat with joy at being alone.
