About this book
Poems is a book by George P. Morris, and its contents list a memoir and titles such as, among others, The Deserted Bride, The Croton Ode and Woodman, Spare that Tree. The text speaks of General Morris's claims to the title that the common voice of the country has given him, The Song-Writer of America. The text says the energy and variety of Homer are illustrated in eight-and-forty books, while the remains of Sappho might be written on the surface of a leaf of the laurus nobilis.
One set of verses says it is useless to speak of the griefs of society, and that they overtake us in passing along. A judge asks what the jury says, and the foreman answers promptly that the prisoners are innocent. The chorus sings of bringing loyal hearts as free-will offerings to the king.
