About this book

A proposed visit to a German liner sets off an argument on a Madeira hotel veranda. Eighteen-year-old Nanette wants to join the party, while her parents have other plans for her morning. Jack Kelton watches her every move, and the narrator, Decies, records their exchanges with amused attention. When Nanette swims far out into the bay, the holiday chatter gives way to alarm about the current and her chances of getting back.

Sax Rohmer combines this social comedy and romantic uncertainty with a spy story. In a later conversation, Major O'Shea discusses a traveller using a false passport and the difficulty of identifying him before the ship reaches Southampton. Palm gardens, terrace tea and approaching departures give the intrigue a leisurely holiday setting. Readers interested in adventure shaped by flirtation and concealed identities will find both strands running through these scenes.
