About this book
The preface divides the work into an account of ethical questions and a survey of ethical systems, with the first division treating the ethical standard and the moral faculty at length. The survey generally abstracts each author's own exposition, with the amount of detail determined by relative importance and with a few exceptions to that practice.
The discussion defines the ethical end as a portion of the welfare of people living together in society, realized through enforced rules of conduct. The classification of ethical rules distinguishes rules imposed under a penalty for neglect or violation from rules whose only external support consists of rewards.
