About this book
The preface presents results of work on logical theory carried out in the Department of Philosophy of the University of Chicago during its first decade. The eleven Studies are the work of eight different hands, all except the editor having held fellowships in the university at some period. The editor has occasionally, though rarely, added a footnote or phrase that might connect one study more closely with another.
The discussion presents a choice between treating thinking as a response to a specific stimulus and regarding thinking as something with traits, elements, and laws of its own. The account of evolutionary method treats an organ, structure, or formation as an instrument of adjustment or adaptation to a particular surrounding situation. The philosophical discussion contrasts the Eleatics' assertion of the sole reality of the One with the multiplicity without essential unity postulated by Anaxagoras and the Atomists.
