About this book

A meeting beneath a cherry tree starts the adventures of Gon and Koma, two cats who leave their homes together in the opening tale of this collection. Their search for a shared life leads them into a princess's park, where a fierce dog threatens them and a passing servant changes their fortunes. The animals speak and feel like people, bringing affection and household loyalties into the world of fairy tales.

Edited by Andrew Lang, the volume brings together Japanese, Sicilian, Catalan, African, Danish and Swedish stories, alongside tales by Andersen. Another passage follows a young man seeking the water of life, a talking bird and a branch from a tree of beauty. A giant warns him about the mocking stones on the mountain ahead. Readers interested in folklore can compare how these separate traditions use magical objects, animal characters and tests of courage to shape their stories.

About the author

Andrew Lang

The Blue Fairy Book of 1889 did well enough for Longmans, Green to keep the series running for a quarter of a century, and Andrew Lang put his name to twenty-five volumes, The Yellow Fairy Book among them in 1894. Much of the labour was his wife's.
