About this book

A Japanese kindergarten prepares for Christmas, and one small pupil believes a special guest is coming to the feast. Four-year-old Tãke Nishimura, called Mr. Bamboo, takes pride in imitating his father, a general. He works quickly on colorful ornaments and arrives for the celebration in a blue uniform with gold braid. His cough worries his teacher, who hopes to explain the meaning of the story about the child in the manger.

Frances Little presents the tale through the account of a young Japanese teacher at a mission school. Paper flowers, forest berries, songs and a candlelit tree fill her description of the classroom festivities. The boy interprets unfamiliar ideas through the shrines and offerings he knows, giving the teacher both pleasure and concern. Readers interested in childhood and religious teaching can follow the gap between an adult's explanation and a child's eager, literal understanding.
