About this book
A newspaper advertisement brings Helen Cameron and her infant son to Upton Court, a faded manor house offering rooms in the village of Aberleigh. The young widow welcomes fresh air, drives along the country lanes and begins restoring an overgrown garden. Her comfortable income carries a condition against remarriage, giving questions of companionship and future happiness a practical weight beneath the pleasant rural scene.
Mary Russell Mitford tells this short story through a narrator whose family becomes closely acquainted with Helen. Attention later turns to M. Choynowski, a reserved newcomer who helps in the garden and arranges a stove for the smoky nursery. His kindness and learning impress his neighbours, while his guarded personal history arouses their concern. Readers interested in English village life and courtship will find a story attentive to household comforts, social assumptions and the small acts through which people reveal their character.
