About this book

From her nursery window, little Ida watches an elderly neighbour pass through a green gate each morning on her way to church. She names the woman Mrs. Overtheway, imagining the comforts of her house and the happiness of her daily life. Ida has lost her mother and her sailor father, and now lives with a reserved great-uncle. Her interest in the woman across the street gives her a quiet source of amusement and consolation.

Juliana Horatia Ewing builds this children's story around Ida and the older woman's recollections. Remembered childhood fears, friendly teasing and ordinary pleasures sit alongside grief and recovery from illness. In one episode, a puzzling nighttime sound becomes the subject of a lively conversation.
