About this book
Murat, by Alexandre Dumas, Pere, comes from the set of Eight Volumes of Celebrated Crimes and has sections headed Toulon, Corsica and Pizzo. On the 18th June, 1815, at the very moment when the destiny of Europe was being decided at Waterloo, a man dressed like a beggar was silently following the road from Toulon to Marseilles.
Murat, leaning on the arm of the marshal, tells Brune that he must leave France, begin his vagabond life again, and say farewell to Toulon, which recalls so many memories to him. The king, still uncertain of the welcome which awaited him in Corsica, took the name of the Count of Campo Melle, and it was under this name that he landed at Bastia on the 25th August. The old man answers the king by recalling that when his Majesty came to Pizzo in 1810, he asked for 25,000 francs to enable them to finish their church, and was sent 40,000 francs.
