About this book

The opening places Colonel Sir Thomas Nevil and his daughter at the Hotel Beauveau in Marseilles on their return from a tour in Italy. The narrator says universal admiration has produced a sort of reaction among many tourists who wish to seem singular. Colomba calls Brandolaccio an upright man but says she has heard that Castriconi is quite unprincipled.

Orso says the two men are at open war with society, their first crime leading them into fresh crimes every day. A rifleman's account describes a fight with brigands in which nobody was killed or wounded, but a cooking pot and two girls were captured.
