About this book
Nisida, by Alexandre Dumas, Pere, comes from the Eight Volume set Celebrated Crimes and is headed 1825 in its contents. A passage advises visitors to land at the mole, or at Mergellina, on a fine summer day and at the hour when some solemn procession is moving out of the cathedral. A passage describes the religious orders marching past, from the Dominicans to the Carthusians, from the Carmelites to the Capuchins.
A scene names Nunziata and Gelsomina, two charming damsels, who push their pretty heads into the first rank, and Gelsomina greets Father Bruno. A passage says Nisida was preoccupied by her lover's departure, and that Solomon, sharing unconsciously in his daughter's grief, swallowed but a drop or two of wine. An old man says they have no pity, that he cast himself at the king's feet, at everybody's feet, and that there is no pardon, no mercy for them.
