About this book
The book is titled “Murphy” and subtitled A Message to Dog-Lovers. The book is inscribed to that vast host in the human family that loves dogs. The text says it goes without saying that Murphy noticed all these things, and that he watched nevertheless closely, his black eyebrows moving continually just above his eyes, as he lay in the rough grass in the shade of the pollard willows.
The text says Dan’s last resting-place was, of course, in the dogs’ burial-ground in the family home, and that to lie there was the highest honour bestowable, which Dan had wholly earned. The text mentions Turkey and says that, in spite of the way the dog is generally regarded, he is all the while certainly classed as supernatural, and by no less an authority than the Koran. The text says that an unclean animal, from whom men shrink, lest by chance their garments touch him as they pass, is given, as already related, a position in Mahomed’s paradise.
