About this book
Charles Hedges compiled these speeches of Benjamin Harrison, twenty-third President of the United States, from February 1888 to February 1892. The title page lists campaign speeches, a letter of acceptance, the inaugural address, speeches delivered during several tours, and extracts from his messages to Congress. The preface says the book is not meant to present a few polished pieces of oratory.
In the pages sampled, General Harrison thanks visiting groups from Hendricks County, Indiana, including the Danville Club and the Republican Club of Plainfield, after news of the result at Chicago reached them, and he recalls that the county furnished two companies to the regiment he took into the field. Another passage states his belief in bimetallism and the fullest use of silver compatible with the parity of the gold and silver dollars. A passage on Vermont urges that the lessons of history and examples of heroism be kept before later generations.
