About this book
The first-person account describes a passage from nihilism to the Church prompted by the feeling that life required religion and knowledge of good and evil beyond animal instincts. The narrator describes Christianity, as then perceived, as a vague spiritual tendency from which no clear and peremptory rules for life could be deduced. The narrator says that the Church's rules about faith, dogmas, sacraments, fasts and prayers seemed unnecessary and without a basis in Christian truth.
The account expresses particular trouble that human misery, mutual judgment, and resulting wars went on with the Church's approbation. The discussion of Christian witness says that a Christian knowing the truth must make that testimony manifest by example and must renounce war.
