About this book

The Cause of it All is a play in two acts. The list of characters includes Akulína, an old woman of seventy, brisk, dignified, old-fashioned, and Michael, her son, thirty-five years old, passionate, self-satisfied, vain and strong.

Act I is set in autumn in a peasant's hut, where Akulína sits spinning, Martha the housewife is kneading bread and little Paráshka is rocking a cradle. Martha says her heart feels heavy and she knows it means trouble, and recalls the other day, when a man went to town to sell the firewood and drank nearly half of it. A parcel is given to the Tramp with the words that he can take it and drink it on the way, and the Tramp says that, had he been beaten like a dog, it would have felt less hard.
