About this book
In Singapore's stifling March heat, a stranger checks into the Hotel of the Three Desires with a letter naming the place and date. The establishment attracts sailors and other travellers who keep their affairs private, while its watchful Portuguese proprietor, Manuel, attends closely to both his guests and their money. Guy Boothby opens My Strangest Case with a crowded port, guarded conversations and the suggestion of an arranged meeting.
The detective novel later brings its first-person investigation into London. A wealthy man called Hayle carefully conceals his name and address, puzzling the narrator as he weighs what Hayle might fear from former companions. Meanwhile, two men follow the investigator through streets near the Strand and Regent Street, prompting a planned confrontation. Published in 1901, the story combines observation, suspicious behaviour and physical danger. Readers interested in detective adventures can follow the way small signs of secrecy become reasons for closer inquiry.
