About this book

A frantic visitor at Baker Street brings Hemlock Holmes and Dr. Watson a problem involving the Earl of Puddingham's diamond cuff-buttons. Eustace Thorneycroft, the earl's secretary, reports that a pair of the treasured family heirlooms has disappeared. Holmes answers the alarm with jokes and a display of deduction, turning the familiar detective consultation into a comic performance.

Published in 1918, James Francis Thierry's novel parodies the Holmes stories through Watson's slangy narration, elaborate aristocratic names and the detective's theatrical confidence. The investigation leads to Normanstow Towers in Surrey, with its servants, stables and anxious owner. Disguises and confrontations give the case a bustling pace, while Watson's enthusiastic commentary keeps drawing attention to his partner's methods. Readers interested in detective fiction's comic side will find a story that makes both the puzzle and the conventions of telling it part of the entertainment.
