About this book
The title page of The Apiary describes the book as a familiar account of the habits of bees and the most improved methods of management, with full directions, adapted for the cottager, farmer, or scientific apiarian. A section on exterior arrangements and apparatus says there is no contrivance for protecting hives from the weather so complete as a bee-house. The text says the right time for feeding is in the autumn or spring, and that it is not well to feed in mid-winter or when the weather is very cold.
The text says a little food in the spring stimulates the queen to lay more abundantly, for bees are provident and do not rear the young so rapidly when the supplies are short. The text says that what strikes us in this model factory is the unity of action which reigns throughout. The text says a person may take six brood-combs from a hive and so stock the unicomb at once, which the writers did for the show at Exeter.
