About this book
A working hive becomes both a practical problem and an object of close observation in L. L. Langstroth's 1853 beekeeping manual. The book explains the roles of queen, worker and drone, then connects their habits with the care of a colony. Its contents cover comb, wax, pollen and protection from changes in temperature. Langstroth presents movable combs as a means of giving the keeper greater control over the hive, drawing on his own studies and the investigations of other bee observers.
Detailed directions for dividing colonies show how much depends on locating the queen, handling developing queen cells carefully and choosing suitable weather and light. Alongside this practical attention, the preface treats the hive as evidence of divine order. Readers interested in natural history or the development of beekeeping will find a nineteenth-century account of how close observation informs tools and everyday decisions.
