About this book
The book presents the results of an ethnological research expedition, with an account of native life dated from Masasi at the end of July, 1906. The discussion of harvests describes the difficulty of preserving large quantities of food for eight or nine months in a condition fit for use. The account of beer drinking describes gatherings held at each man's house in turn, making everyone a host on one occasion and a guest on another.
The narrator records Makua and Makonde men dictating names and explanations into a notebook during an investigation of the Yaos. The account of the Yaos reports a second division into large groups, independent of their system of matriarchal, exogamous clans.
