About this book
The Mafulu: Mountain People of British New Guinea is by Robert W. Williamson, with an introduction by A. C. Haddon, Sc.D., F.R.S., and with illustrations and a map. The preface says the book is the outcome of an expedition to British New Guinea in 1910. The preface says the writer ultimately reached the district of the Mafulu villages, of whose people very little was known.
The text explains that the term Mafulu is the Kuni pronunciation of Mambule, which is the name, as used by themselves, of the people who live in a group of villages. The text says that when a man dies, or at all events after the widow removes her mourning, she goes back to her own people, generally taking with her any of their young children. A list of number words gives Two: karaala, Ten: kowa and Twenty: kowakowa.
