About this book
Native Son is by T. D. Hamm. The blurb says Tommy hated Earth, knowing his mother might go home to Mars without him, and asks whether a robot would secretly take her place. Tommy Benton, on his first visit to Earth, finds the wonders of twenty-first-century New York thrilling the first week and boring and unhappy the second week, and at the end of the third he is definitely ready to go home.
Homesickness floods over a character who remembers the endless vistas of rabbara fields beside a canal that was like an inland sea. Aunt Bee looks a character up and down with frank disapproval and says loudly to Helen to take him to a good tailor and get those bones covered up. In one exchange a mother asks Tommy anxiously whether he likes Earth, and the reply is that it's all right, I guess. A watch in a case has, besides the regulation Terran dial, a second smaller dial that registers the corresponding time on Mars.
