About this book

A ship bound from Peru for China and Japan runs short of food after contrary winds carry it into unfamiliar waters. Its passengers reach a sheltered port, only to receive an order to remain offshore. The people they encounter offer provisions and care for the sick, but admission depends on careful rules. Francis Bacon uses this uncertain welcome to introduce Bensalem, an imagined society whose customs the visitors gradually learn.

Published in 1627, New Atlantis presents a fragment of an ideal commonwealth through a traveller's account. Scientific inquiry has a public purpose, and the pursuit of knowledge reaches beyond the island's borders. The account also pauses over a family ceremony where disputes are settled and relatives in need receive help. Readers interested in political thought and the history of science can examine how Bacon connects hospitality, religious belief, organised research and family authority in his picture of social order.
