About this book

A polar expedition opens the way to an interior world in William Richard Bradshaw's 1892 science fiction novel. Its imagined country, Atvatabar, has an ocean, a royal court, flying men and an elaborate religious order. Chapter headings and illustrations introduce unfamiliar plants, an aerial ship and a locomotive climbing mountain heights. These inventions give the adventure its scale and make the workings of the strange country part of the story.

Religious authority becomes a more personal problem at Egyplosis. A young couple with an infant demand freedom from an order whose rules bind them to an ideal of love. The high priest threatens lifelong confinement, while the goddess questions what they are prepared to surrender. The scene places private attachment against institutional power. Readers interested in early speculative fiction can find both extravagant machinery and arguments about how an imagined society governs its people.
