About this book
The introduction describes a gathering of small works on varied subjects, comparing such collections to a wood because of the multiplicity of their material. The reflections on learning and sovereignty describe reciprocal needs, with learning requiring rest supplied by sovereignty and sovereignty requiring counsel supplied by learning. The discussion of counsel identifies a reputation for honesty and wisdom as the chief sources of persuasive authority for a person's advice to others.
The discussion of education recommends examining children's natures at the beginning of study and drawing learners forward through exercise and emulation rather than frightening them. The educational reflections describe changes in study as a refreshment that brings knowledge through recreation and call the school itself a play or game.
