About this book
New Zealanders at Gallipoli is a book by Fred Waite, described on its title page as Adjutant Divisional Engineers, N.Z. & A. Division, 1914-15. The dedication To the Memory of Our Glorious Dead carries verse lines attributed to Laurence Binyon, among them They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. The text says that an officer, Colonel Malone, at once set himself the task of making his post as perfect and impregnable as he could.
The text names Colonel Bauchop, of the Otago Mounted Rifles, and says that for a very long time he held command of the extreme semi-detached outposts. The text says the Turks opposite Courtney's commenced to enfilade the captured position with machine-gun fire. The text says the Australians were asked to carry out another attack on German Officers' Trench, and that this sortie failed about 3 a.m. The text defines Bloody Angle as the gully between Dead Man's Ridge and Quinn's Post.
